Hi Victor Out of curiosity what is the air temp in you freezer room as the outside ambient temp can affect freezer running temp I’ve been told if the outside air temp is colder than the set temp. freezer will switch itself off. Temp in the spare room is pretty cool BJS, think I've mentioned before that I shut off the central heating radiator in there for the time being. We've had overnight OAT lows of around 4 C although I see this morning a load of cars with a coating of frost on their windscreens, one woman in a Focus sitting with the wipers scraping away merrily, probably shredding her blades. Ah well, poor darlings, probably all a bit technical for her but good news for the auto spares shops..

Victor - my neighbour suggested three possible causes: 1. the compressor is on the way out; 2. there is an accumulation of fluff at the back of the freezer; 3. the system is iced-up. In his opinion, the compressor is the most likely cause on a domestic unit which is 12 years old. The cost of replacement and re-gassing, etc. will be close to the cost of a new freezer. It is possible to re-gas a unit but again the cost is relatively expensive and it is a long shot whether it will solve the problem. However, last year my auto defrost tall freezer was playing up (and making an unusual noise), so I turned it off for a few hours (with the door shut) and it was fine when it restarted. Ice had built up on the motor, out of sight. Being a mere 400 miles away, I will get some earplugs against the screams in case you are going to have to let the moths out of your sporran for a new one. OK thanks Dulac, I'm pinning my hopes on an accumulation of ice somewhere down the back. I've been incredibly busy the last week or so but noticed that yesterday the red light remained off even though the wife was in there taking food out, sometimes before you only had to open the door and the light would come on. I've made some inquiries locally about getting someone to check and repair it but it's a throw-away society these days.
PS Moths are safely dormant in my sporran for the time being, and you're right, my respose to spending money makes nails down the chalkboard sound melodious.
