Great picture BJS which will come in handy fpr any DIYer's on the board. I tried to find out a while ago whether the automatic and manual transfer boxes were the same part number but never did establish. Somewhere in my files I have the type of oil and quantity required for the transfer box, need to see if I can locate it.

I remember that a while ago I looked further into the type of oil to be used on these transfer boxes and the only type listed as suitable was that marketed by GM. It seemed that no equivalent product was available. Of course, people can use whatever they want but I took the view that - in the event of a premature catastrophic failure - it is no good knocking on Vauxhall's door if you haven't been using the correct oil.

A good question that has been asked before, but without a definitive answer. It seems this item is not referred to in the standard service schedules. Mine had its 3 year (i.e. 30000 mile) service recently and I specifically asked for the transfer box level to be checked and topped-up, for the first time. This was additional to the standard service and the VX dealer had to get some oil sent over from another branch. The item appeared on my invoice as an extra, but at least it was done by a Vauxhall dealer and I have a record of it.

I got the transfer box oil myself for around £10 & genuine Vauxhall oil when dealer wanted £25 with service club discount & had it changed when I had clutch & flywheel replaced by vx dealer.

Hi ya I have mine now checked every service if it needs topping up and will have it replaced every 3 years as the cost of oil is so much cheaper than having to replace the transfer box if it fails because unit has poss run dry £2000 upto £4500 ouch

As it’s a used car and from Yorkshire cheap do you reckon it’s worth a change? Didn’t come with much service history Cheers

Didn’t come with much service history Cheers Hi mratk i would be poss looking at having it replaced on next service if it’s this year. if service is next year but I would recommend everyone to have oil level checked via top plug 1st noting vehicle must be level. Getting oil level checked before oil is emptied to poss show any leaks etc and if oil level is ok before change then should be good for another year 👍

Worth doing - just in case. Can you add your car details as a footnote to appear in each of your posts; it helps with any queries.

Hi Dulac, how do I add a footnote with my vehicle details, I think I may be a bit thick were this is concerned.

Sign in; go to Profile (on the header bar); click 'edit profile'; add the description to your signature. I always use a desktop PC but if you use a phone it might look different to what I described, although the principle is probably the same.
