The biggest problem used to be rust. Mechanical issues were comparatively simple and rather than throw a unit away, you could buy the bits for it. Electrical problems mainly concerned the points and condenser.
Since 1970 I have had (in chronological order):
Morris 1100 - rotten as a pear Ford Anglia 105E - rotten as a pear Austin Healey 'frogeye' Sprite - rotten as a pear Ford Cortina Mk1 1.5 (1965) - these cars mysteriously did not rust like some others; simple and reliable Renault 16TS auto - the most comfortable car I have driven Volvo 343 - a DAF with another badge Austin Maxi 1750 - versatile and engineers always seemed to choose these Triumph 1300 - no comment Vauxhall Carlton 2.0 estate auto - very good apart from the sunshine roof Nissan Micra 1.0 (1982) - excellent and lasted for years Peugeot 505 2.5 diesel Family Estate - wonderful big lump, simply and heavily engineered to last Peugeot 205 GRD 1.8 turbo diesel - as brisk as a bee Vauxhall Omega 2.0 estate - seriously underrated and probably my favourite Peugeot 406 HDi 2.0 diesel estate - trouble free another Peugeot 406 HDi 2.0 diesel estate - trouble free Citroen C3 Pluriel 1.4 - heavy, sluggish and trouble free Peugeot 407 SW HDi 2.0 diesel estate - a very good car Peugeot 3008 HDi 2.0 diesel estate - a very good car Antara SE Nav - an ongoing experience and a good workhorse Smart4two 0.9 turbo - remarkable for modern day driving
They say "never judge a man by his motor car". I think this applies to those who drive flash or expensive cars because many of them are company owned or on a PCP. The true judge is when the driver has a peaked cap and the owner sits in the back. Where is the pleasure in driving in the UK these days?
