2.2 AWD has a rumbling noise from offside front & mechanic thought it was wheel bearing so changed hub & it is still the same. It goes a bit quieter when turning left & gets more noisy with speed then quietens down a bit when at 70 mph, anyone got a idea what may be wrong. you

Victor both sides replaced 6 months ago & rumbling started so mechanic suspected faulty bearing on offside so replaced to no avail. Do you think it is bearing just inside gearbox & can that be changed if it is that at fault.

Hard to say what's causing the noise Kevin, this type of thing is notoriously difficult to diagnose. You hear of cases where they've changed this bearing and that coupling then it turns out to be the tyres or propshaft or something else. I'm assuming your mechanic looked at all the usual suspects and there's no suspicious noises when jacked up and drive shafts/hubs are rotated but transfer box is usually on the list. I'd try changing all the fluids with synthetic oils, can't do any harm.
I've never removed an F40 gearbox and I don't have access to a manual for it but I'd doubt very much whether any of the bearings could be replaced in-situ, things are just too tight in there.

Ouch! There was a lot of discussion on this over the past few years where most of the failures were catastrophic (castings disintegrating, etc), although there were not very many reported failures - more to do with how can it be prevented. Can yours be repaired as you might have caught it in time? Do you know what the cause is (e.g. poor lubrication, uneven tyre wear, etc.)? Some owners had the transfer box removed and reverted to FWD only. Another sourced a relatively inexpensive replacement from a firm in the West Country (I think) and some units were available on eBay, but care was needed to match the serial number. There is a great deal of archive material on the other Antara site, much of it contributed by some who transferred to this site. Might be worth a look before making your decision. Good Luck.

Sorry to hear about your transfer box Kev but at least you now know what it is. If you're thinking of replacing it try Bristol Transmissions, they have (from memory) exchange rebuilt units. Alternatively they might be ableto supply all the parts needed to overhaul the box

The box is going to be sent to a local specialist to see if they can repair it.Been told it is the bearings that are probably going.
